Parties’ move shows firm foundation laid for political affairs: politicians

Peaceful interactions of political parties following the consent on the election code of conduct demonstrates firm foundation laid for democracy, political parties said.

Representatives of parties, which took part at a state banquet thrown to different political parties at the National Palace on Friday, said the political situation in the country is auspicious.

All Ethiopian Unity Organization Chairperson Eng. Hailu Shawul said though there are differences among parties tolerance and discussion is the only option for the sake of public interest. He said if the present trend continues until the end of the forthcoming national election, Ethiopia will be one of the democratic nations in the world.

Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP) Chairperson, Lidetu Ayalew on his part said the consent among political parties is historical in the history of Ethiopia and is meaningful to the public.

The agreement among political parties would pave the way for political platform for the better, he said. Lidetu hopefully expressed belief that the forthcoming national election will be fair and transparent. He called on the entire public to pressurize political parties to adhere themselves to the election code of conduct and the rule of law.

Executive member of the Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) Muktar Kedir on his part said agreement of the parties on the election code of conduct is a sign of commitment to make the upcoming election peaceful and democratic. He said the agreement has changed the political scenario in the country and EPRDF has played the leading role for the achievements.

Muktar said EPRDF is providing training to its members on the election code of conduct and is committed to the implementation of the agreement. (ENA)
