The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) said registration of candidates for the upcoming national elections has been extended for additional 20 days.

NEBE told ENA here on Monday that it decided to extend the registration day at its 112th extraordinary meeting as per the request of political parties.

Accordingly, registration of candidates, which was scheduled to end on February 2, 2010 will continue until February 22, 2010.

It said so far 36 political parties have fielded 438 candidates for seats in the parliament and 603 nominees for regional councils.

Some 38 independent nominees have also been registered, it said, adding, 30 of them compete for seats in the parliament.

Meanwhile, more than 20.6 million voters have been registered across the country until last Thursday. Some 9.7 million of the voters are women.

A total of some 32 million electorates are expected to be registered, NEBE said.
